Seismic Detection Equipment Networking by Cellular Router
Earthquake detection now relies more and more on wireless network, especially cellular & satellite ways, because these methods can provide with flexible networking for field detection devices while ignoring geographic limitation. With lower cost and higher transmission speed than satellite, cellular finally becomes major choice.
To provide seismic monitoring system with reliable links, networking devices must be:
- Reliable in harsh environments (e.g.: adapt to wide temperature & wide humidity)
- Low power consumption for unattended field
- Robust, with link auto-recovery
The project introduced below was about an academic program which uses cellular technology for seismic equipment networking.
In this project, the academic agency wanted to gather information from the whole area where the earthquake happened frequently. They built thousands of seismic stations to gather local information and put a seismic monitor in each station. Whenever there’s little quake detected by the seismic monitor, an event file was produced which recorded the parameters of vibration, for example, direction, intensity and time. All these event files would be sent to the earthquake study center, and then helped to analysis.
For this program, satellite could be a very expensive way and limited in width to transmit event file. Therefore the agency chose to use cellular network. In each station, IR700 cellular router connected with a seismic monitor by a RJ45 cable then the seismic monitor could get access to internet and send data to the center.
One of the big problems the customer cared about was the reliability of the cellular network. Because almost the stations located in the wild area where there was unstable signal strength. Fortunately, IR700 cellular router had a very strong link detection and auto-recovery mechanism which could reconnect to internet within 5 minutes whenever failed.
